Saturday Street Parking in Downtown Anchorage - UPDATE

June 12, 2017

Stakeholders & ACDA Board of Directors Recommends Pilot Program

EasyPark’s "Saturday Parking Stakeholder Group", comprised of downtown business owners and leaders to discuss Saturdays parking in downtown Anchorage, recommended that EasyPark should take the step of a Saturday parking pilot program for downtown Anchorage. The Anchorage Community Development Authority (ACDA) Board of Directors, who oversees EasyPark, met on June 1, 2017 and also supported that EasyPark move forward with a pilot program for Saturday parking.

In June of 2016, EasyPark postponed its proposed launch of Saturday enforcement at the behest of Mayor Berkowitz to gather additional data to justify the decision. Easy Park proceeded to collect on street data for three months, before it was independently analyzed. The data found that approximately 1 out of every 3 spaces was being occupied by all day parkers, with a potential cost to retailers an estimated 60% in potential retail sales per Saturday. The "Saturday Parking Stakeholder Group" reviewed this data and concurred that steps need to be taken to improve the circulation of Saturday street parking.

One of the recommendations from the "Saturday Parking Stakeholder Group" was to take the step of enforcing the 2 hour time limit on Saturdays at the designated 2 hour meters. EasyPark and the ACDA Board of Directors have reviewed that option as a positive step to address opening up parking spaces for the customers who visit downtown businesses. “The primary purpose of parking meters is to promote customer turnover. Meters are also used to distribute limited on-street parking to provide spaces for short-term shoppers and business clients; and to maximize the economic viability of the district by creating convenient parking, said Brian Borguno, EasyPark’s Parking Director.

EasyPark will begin the pilot program of 2-hour enforcement on July 1, 2017. During the month of July, warning tickets will be issued to parkers who are violating the 2-hour parking rule in downtown Anchorage at the 2 hour designated area (2 hour street meters poles are designated with the color gray) as a first step to educate the public on the enforcement change. Payment at street meters will not be required on Saturday or Sundays.

The Saturday Parking Stakeholder Group will continue to meet to discuss the following topics: Metrics & Measurement, Marketing & PR, and additional Programs for Downtown Anchorage.  If you would like to get involved and participate with the "Saturday Parking Stakeholder Group", contact Melinda Gant at 297-4415.
